Sounds like you got hit by a whirly-gig or a dust devil as we called them in Ethiopia. I have often seen them take the sheet metal roof off buildings. Sometimes if one was traveling and was able to overlook the plains, one could see five or more at one time. In Ethiopia this is still the dry season and is the time when most dust devils were to be seen. I never recall them in the wet season but then I was at boarding school in Addis Ababa where such instances were rare at all seasons, as best I remember. They seemed more prevalent down in the lowlands at 4 to 6 thousand feet, probably because it was hotter.
